Erudite Epicure

Piri piri is a popular sauce that is used in cooking and as a condiment. But what is piri piri actually? Piri piri is a type of chilli pepper grown and found in the wild in many parts of Africa. It literally translates to “pepper pepper” in Swahili. It is also called African bird's eye chili.
The regions it grows in are Angola, Uganda, Malawi, South Africa, Ghana, Nigeria, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, South Sudan and Ethiopia. It was brought to Goa by the Portuguese.
Piri piri the sauce was created by the Portuguese. It is made from crushed chillies, citrus peel, onion, pepper, salt, lemon juice, bay leaves, paprika, pimento, basil, oregano and tarragon. It is easily made in a blender or by shaking up the ingredients in a jar.
Piri piri is used as seasoning or marinade and is also available as a powder.
