The Spice is Right

Sancho’s celebrates its first anniversary with a Mexican Chili and Margarita festival

Its all about the chillies - Anchos, Chipotle, Arbol, Guajillo, Habernos. “We have kept the dishes as authentic as possible,” Chef Kiran from Sanchos told Explocity, “Even though some of them are too spicy, even for the Indian palate.” The special menu has rustic and classic Mexican dishes all flavoured with the best of native Mexican chillies.

The appetizers boast dishes like Oven Baked Baby Lobsters, an all round winner. The sauce is made with Chipotle chillies and some strong Tequila, just the kind we like. The refreshing Watermelon, Crumbled Cheese and Jalapeno Salad is served with a spicy and cheesy dressing. The Tostadas made with homemade smoked Chorizo was a hit. The veg version with Arbol tossed soya was lovely too.

The mains came in quite hefty portions but we just couldn't get enough. Our recommendation is the Grilled Serrano Marinated Fresh Catch of the Day Fish which is served with sautéed vegetables, corn on the cob, Mexican rice, and fresh mango salsa. Another champion was the Tequila Fired Habanero Cottage Cheese we particularly liked the banana leaf wrapped Mexican bean rice that it was served with.

Dessert was no less innovative: Popsicles made with fresh mango cubes, chipotle, green chillies and Habanero and Sea Salt Chocolate Mini Sparkles. Even the desserts were spiked with chilllies and the zing just added to the flavour. From the margaritas the best was the Jalapenos Margarita.

The secret? “Our dishes and sauces are made from ingredients which come directly from Mexico when possible. The chillies specially,” chef confided.
