What Are Toutons?

Toutons are a piece of fried bread dough. This Canadian dish is found mainly in Newfoundland. They may have been invented to finish up any leftover dough from bread-making. The bread dough is flattened and fried in butter or pork fat. Over time, more healthy fats are used to make this dish.

Toutons are a popular breakfast or brunch item. It is rarely known outside of Newfoundland, but the Newfoundland-ians (-ers?) think it popular.

They are served with corn syrup or molasses because they are likened to pancakes. Though we would have thought it’s more like a bun or doughnut.
