Chittara Art Workshop Session 1

February 8 @ 10:30 am - February 9 @ 4:00 pm

Chittara is a folk art practice existing in the Deevaru community- a matriarchal and agrarian community of nature-worship era, residing in and around Sagar, Karnataka.

Chittara drawings are intricate patterns that represent the auspicious ceremony and rituals of life, symbolized in geometric patterns. This requires a certain understanding of ratios and proportions which the women of the community have been using with great dexterity.

The paintings are usually 2-3 feet in size, aesthetically refined, made of symbols representing their physical environment. They use eco-friendly natural colours like ground rice paste for white color, roasted rice for black, Gurige seeds for yellow colour and red earth for red colour. The brushes are made up of Pundi Naaru (a kind of jute).

For the women of Deevaru community Chittara paintings are a source of great joy, beauty and creativity.
