The Mandarin Muse – Ready to Wear AW18

Tarun Tahiliani reflects a mirror to the east in an evocative collection of Ready To Wear ensembles and separates for Autumn/Winter 2018-19. Wrapped in Oriental layers of myth and splendor, The Mandarin Muse personifies the cosmopolitan spirit of the modern Indian woman. A precocious woman who imbibes her many influences in a contemporary sensibility of individual style.

“India is layered with the centuries of influence that have passed through it. I think these influences have played an intrinsic part in who we are today and that is what I love to infuse in my collections. In this series of Ready to Wear, I have rooted my inspiration in the bold florals, textiles and constructed drapes of the Orient. Their cohesive understanding of structuring garments is something that strongly resonates with my aesthetic.” – Tarun Tahiliani

A lush canvas of rich textiles is juxtaposed with renditions of an Oriental inspiration coloured with Indian artistry in The Mandarin Muse. In a vivid collection of nine capsules, structured drapes and constructed silhouettes are layered with hand-painted motifs of inspired art, classic Indian embroideries, delicate embellishments and Swarovski crystals. Across Indo-chic ensembles, concept saris, lehengas, silk bombers, draped kurtas, kaftans, silk jersey tops, dresses, jumpsuits, stoles and scarfs are glimpses of an Eastern heritage that continues to intrigue.

Peony In Love

One of the Orient’s most celebrated flowers inspires this capsule collection that blends the traditional Parsi technique of gara embroidery with the floral motifs of the Orient. From chic Indian ensembles and stylized separates to traditional anarkalis and classic kalidars, peonies meet an intricate framework of Mughal jallis in silks of crimson, biscuit, teal, ivory and jade.

Orchid Empress

A capsule collection crafted in a vibrant palette of blush, jade, ochre, ivory and vermillion, Orchid Empress recreates the resplendent gardens of Oriental royalty on reams of plush silk. In floral hues and draped silhouettes, a contemporary range of dresses, jumpsuits, silk-jersey tops, concept saris and statement wraps finds itself layered with Indian silk brocades and metallic braids on striking prints reminiscent of the regal artistry of the Orient in bloom.
Shanghai Girl

The iconic symbols of Shanghai’s ancient heritage steeped in the legends and traditions of Mandarin mythology, come to life in this capsule collection that embodies its captivating allure. Gilets, asymmetric dresses, silk bomber jackets, structured lehengas and stoles in bold monochromes of

printed ebony, scarlet and ivory characterize this soiree collection lined with prints of ikat and finished in velveteen silk.

Orient Express

Illustrating the mythical allure of the Orient in stark ombrès and gilded prints, this capsule delves into the heady landscape of the Far East. The distinct elements that dot its natural panorama and the rich treasures traded through its lands are encapsulated in an eclectic collection of oriental imagery in hand-painted gara, Mughal buttis, Swarovski crystal highlights, and engineered jewel embellishments. A collection that moves from chic sheer silk bombers, cape-sleeved crop tops, versatile body suits, and kaftan kurtas, to double-breasted anarkalis, concept saris, and statement wraps as it paints a striking picture of Oriental opulence.

Silk Route

Exemplified in this capsule are the myriad influences that etched the legendary silk route and its unique confluence of East and West. In its rustic tones of teal, ebony and maroon, is a vivid celebration of the multi-cultural ethnicity of the erstwhile global traveler, who traversed a continent in search of new treasures. Through a play on the nomadic motifs of ancient China interspersed with the graceful paisley of northern India, this capsule blends prints inspired by Jamawar shawls, silk brocades and Bidri artistry on the structured panels of exaggerated Indian silhouettes.

Painted Veil

Crafted in gossamer textiles of sheer silk and tulle, this capsule collection finds its inspiration in the deftly hand-painted ceramics, carved lacquer and fine porcelain of China’s decadent dynasties. Subtle, muted prints are lifted from their ceramic origins and delicately embroidered with layers of silk and metallic threadwork on floral grids of graded density across a line spanning jumpsuit saris, tulle bodysuits and draped lehenga-saris.

Chinoiserie Convention

The dramatic floral embroidery of chinoiserie – the 18th century European interpretation of Oriental artistry, adorns this capsule of oyster grey, ebony and scarlet in monochrome. An imaginary China is rendered in whimsical contrasts on asymmetric scales as bright yarns of gara embroidery are imprinted on fabrics of delicate lace and silk georgette. The mythical blooms and birds of the East wreath this collection of contained drapes and astute cuts embellished with Swarovski crystals, metallic braids and opaque pearls.

An ethereal palette of tone-on-tone prints in sky blue, beige, ivory and blush is elevated with the intricate detailing of chikankari in this capsule collection of whimsical elegance. In its sensual cuts and asymmetric drapes are hints of a Mughal heritage reinvented on hand-painted Oriental motifs. And, nuanced through its distinct silhouettes is a contemporized craft in a new voice of tradition.

The Oriental philosophy of universal equilibrium in opposing forces is embodied in this high-contrast capsule of sheer and opaque textiles in ivory, ebony and antique beige. The quintessential emblems of Yin and Yang are embossed in ruby red, ebony and ivory through silk gara needlework, and layered with intricate quilting, laser-cut grids, exaggerated fringing, Swarovski crystal embellishments, and gossamer panels of Mughal jallis.
