Sanjali Centre for Odissi Dance presents ‘Aanartanam’

Sanjali Centre for Odissi Dance presents ‘Aanartanam’- an evening of Odissi dance on Friday, 15th March at Jagriti Theatre in Whitefield at 8PM. Conceptualized by Odissi exponent Sharmila Mukerjee, Aanartanam will feature four original choreographies that showcase fresh and unconventional themes.

Aanartanam will open with ‘Grishma Geetam’ a poetic Odissi presentation of the season of summer based on Kalidasa’s ‘Ritusamhara. Grishma Geetam brings out the bright, vibrant and colourful hues of the summer season. This will be followed by ‘Kaikeyi’, an abhinaya based solo piece by Sharmila Mukerjee. ‘Kaikeyi’ will portray Ramayana’s much maligned character in a positive light. The presentation will reinterpret the traditional portrayal of the character by showcasing her as a loving wife, a doting mother, a dutiful queen and a brave warrior.

As a part of Aanartanam, Sharmila and her team will also showcase a preview of their upcoming production ‘Sookshma’, an Odissi dance ballet based on the Kannada folktale ‘A flowering Tree’ by AK Ramanujan. Spoken through the language of dance, Sookshma voices the ethos of womanhood, nature and the compelling need to respect both, alike.

The concluding act ‘Moksha’ meaning spiritual liberation is the final presentation in the repertoire. Moksha is a short pure dance sequence that will be followed by a Shloka.

About Sanjali Centre: Sanjali Centre for Odissi Dance was established in 2004 by Sharmila Mukherjee to propagate the style of Odissi created by Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra. This dance institute provides a complete education in the Odissi dance form. This includes the technique, skills, tradition, sadhana and the fulfilment. The Sanjali Dance Ensemble, under the guidance of Sharmila Mukherjee, specialises in thematic Odissi presentations, which display the lyrical and grace of this dance form.
