About Punya Dance Company presents Sampradaya Dance Creations in “PRALAYA” a unique collaboration in Bharatanatyam and Balinese Dance

SAMPRADAYA Dance Creations’ Canada’s award winning Artistic Director, Lata Pada celebrated for her contemporary bharatanatyam creations, has joined forces with distinguished Balinese choreographer Dr. Wayan Dibia, master of Balinese dance and Topeng mask dance– to mine the depth of their respective dance forms’ narrative traditions to create an opulent new work  based on  The Mahabharata,  re-imagined through dance,  puppetry, masks and projection.

PRALAYA

The  word ‘PRALAYA’ means destruction and dissolution of the universe. It is  a contemplation of humanity’s propensity to push the world to the brink of destruction in a  cyclical way. Universal and timeless, PRALAYA tells a tale of dynastic conflict, of earth-shattering chaos and finally an abiding calm, simmering with the potential of being shattered again.  Pralaya is a tale of  two feuding cousin families, the Kauravas  and the Pandavas who fight one another for the throne of Hastinapura.  A  cataclysmic game of dice determines a terrible defeat for the Pandavas who are forced into exile, only to return and win the great battle of Kurushetra but morality, virtue and nobility are lost.

Performed by a cast of 10, including Wayan Dibia and Lata Pada, to a recorded score composed by Bangalore’s Praveen D. Rao featuring master musicians from Bali and India, the contemporary resonance of The Mahabharata is vividly brought to the stage in this bold new dance theatre production on stages across seven cities across India after  having  just completed a three city tour of Indonesia.

Lata Pada, Artistic Director of SAMPRADAYA Dance Creations has a deep connection to Indonesia and has lived in Indonesia for over a decade.  Her research on the performance narratives of South East Asia was the inspiration behind this unprecedented collaboration. Responsible for the concept and joint choreography of Pralaya, as well as one of the show’s two narrators,  she sees Pralaya as a timely reminder of the disturbing times we live in and the recurrence of human behaviour and the destruction of all that we hold sacred and enduring. We want to stimulate, challenge and provide a unique experience for our audience as we bring them on this fantastic journey.”
