The Japanese Snack Takoyaki

Takoyaki is a Japanese snack made of a batter of wheat flour and grilled in a special, round bottom, moulded pan. Tako literally means “diced or minced octopus” which is the filling, and yaki means “to fry or grill”. The yaki grill is made of cast iron. The filling, aside from the octopus, has tempura scraps, pickled ginger and green onions. This dish is then brushed with a takoyaki sauce and mayonnaise. Dried bonito (a kind of tuna) and seaweed.

The street food originated in Osaka and has been around as recently as 1935. This street food has become popular in street festivals other than being commonly made at home.
