Lohri At Paranda, Vivanta by Taj, Yeshwantpur

As we fair weather agrarians try to find out where we can celebrate the harvest, the most authentic stop on the North Indian food trail in Bangalore is the feast of Lohri at Paranda, Vivanta by Taj, Yeshwantpur.

In the South, we know of the harvest festival as Makara Sankaranti, but (principally) in Punjab, the feast is called “Lohri” -- the “r” for some reason is pronounced as “d” in the North, so “Loh-dee”.

The difference is that Lohri is celebrated the night before Makar Sankranti - which being to mind another South-North difference is that the North Indians celebrate everything at night and therefore, they have more fun.

Lohri marks the end of winter season. Winter is more significant in the North where it gets much colder than it does in the South and that’s why the sun's journey to the northern hemisphere is a matter of welcome to Sikhs and Hindus in the North.

The night after Lohri is Makara Sankranti, Pongal or the other one, depending on which part of the country you are from.

Back to feast and fun, in Punjab, there’s a whole lot of dancing and music. In the South everything is too godly and invocative (there’s such a word) and not much of the rowdiness of the Punjabi.

It is with this giddy Punjabi esprit de corps that Paranda, at the Vivanta by Taj, Yeshwantpur will celebrate the festival of Lohri with what better than the flavour of Punjab - right from authentic Punjabi cuisine and hearty bhangra. "We are a popular North Indian restaurant, and there is sizeable North Indian population living around this area, which is why we decided to celebrate Lohri here," Ramasamy Selvaraju, Executive Chef, Vivanta by Taj, Yeshwantpur, told Explocity. "We have wide buffet with live counters and interactive kitchen which we hope will enhance the experience of this festival."

Dishes that are popularly eaten during this festival include Sarson ka Saag, Makai Ki Roti, Chole Kulche ,Gajar ka Halwa, Gachak, Mumphali and Shakarkand.

The buffet at Paranda features starters like Amritsari Fish Fry, Gosht Patiyala Seek, Bharwan Paneer, main course dishes like Rara Gosht, Rajma ,Chatpate Aloo, Dal Makhani and of course, everyone's favourite, the quintessential Punjabi dish Butter Chicken! And make sure you go with a huge appetite for there are desserts like  Angoori Rabdi, Gulab Jamun,  Gajar Halwa and Jalebi to follow.
