Bengaluru: The 10th Attakkalari India Biennial began in December and is now well poised for the last two weeks of live performances, film screenings and workshops and a conference. This weekend packs some serious punch with an entire evening dedicated to discussing the subject of archiving.

 

18 Feb 22 – Workshop for Kids

 

Swedish dance company Memory Wax will be holding a two-hour-long workshop called Playground. It will be led virtually by the Memory Wax team with a dance teacher from Attakkalari coordinating it for participants in the studio. Designed for kids aged 9-12 years, the session will be packed with fun and creative learning. The workshop's main themes are Cooperation, Creativity and Playfulness and the students will learn how to create interaction, dance and movement using everyday objects. 19 Feb 22 - Conference and an installation in the name of Pina Bausch

 

AIB's Talking Performance conference being held in partnership with Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan Bangalore will have experts in the fields of archival studies, traditional dance and contemporary movement arts discussing the intricacies of Archiving Practices of Performances. The team behind the Pina Bausch Digital Archive will be talking about the vision and strategies behind setting up such a seminal repository. Usha Nangiar, Koodiyattam and Nangiarkoothu exponent, will be delving into the work that has gone into archiving traditional Koodiyattam performances  and the importance of documenting traditional arts. The panelists for the discussion include Ismaël Dia, director of the archives of Pina Bausch Foundation, his colleague Julian Klotz, Usha Nangiar, Prof Urmimala Sarkar Munsi and Jayachandran Palazhy.  When: Feb 19, 5pm - 7pm at Attakkalari. 19 & 20 Feb 22 – Installation of the Pina Bausch Digital Archive

 

There will be an installation of the Pina Bausch Digital Archive at the Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts. Archivists, dancers and individuals interested in knowing more about the pioneering German dancer-choreographer can access over 300000 photographs and 9000 videos in addition to costumes, films and programme copies connected to Pina and her world of dance all thanks to the exhaustive digital archive.   When: Feb 19-20, 5pm - 9pm at Attakkalari

 

20 Feb 22 – Film Screening


This Sunday evening will be dedicated to films. There’s a screening of Sleeping Beauty, an experimental reinterpretation of the classic fairy tale, by the South Korean Second Nature Dance Company. Later in the evening, there will be a screening of seven films made by participants who attended an online training course on screendance conducted as part of the Cultural Partnership Initiative (CPI) supported by the ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the Republic of Korea, Attakkalari along with SIDance, S Korea and the Korea Foundation for International Cultural Exchange (KOFICE).  The screenings are free. 23 Feb 22 - -Scape – Indo Japanese Collaboration

 

Bengaluru audiences can catch a performance happening at a live venue. -scape is an Indo-Japanese collaboration that features dancers Hemabharathy Palani and Ryu Suzuki. The dance work is a comment on today’s world where people and lives connect technologically.  -scape chronicles the lives of two dancers from two corners of the world who have only met virtually. The dancers share their personal memories and experiences of people, objects, places and events through technology while transcending the constraints of geography and language. This work has been co-produced by Japan Foundation (New Delhi) and Attakkalari Centre  for Movement Arts (Bengaluru). When: Feb 23, 7.30 pm, Bangalore International Centre, Domlur.
