Event Description

2 INDIAS is a music project blending two historical and diverse cultures from Spain and India – Western Classical and Hindustani Classical in a new avatar.

Pianist and Composer, Sahil Vasudeva, reimagines the works of legendary Spanish Composer, Isaac Albéniz with an Indian Classical Ensemble. He is accompanied by Suhel Saeed Khan on the sitar. Shanawaz Khan on the sarangi, Makrand Sanon on hybrid percussion and Akshay Dwivedi on the bass guitar.

The performance transcribes 150-year-old scores to Hindustani classical text to present an innovative and fresh interpretation of Spain’s Greatest Composer.

2INDIAS has been developed by the Embassy of Spain in India, produced by Meta Arts and presented by range of cultural partners from across the country.

     
Performers
Sahil Vasudeva
Piano

Sahil Vasudeva studied piano under Dr. Nelson Harper at Denison University, Ohio (2004-2008) and with Irina Biryukova in New Delhi (2012-2015). He was selected from a national pool of pianists to perform at the Young Talent Concert Series at NCPA, Mumbai (June 2015) and has since been performing regularly across leading venues in the country. He was studying under Late John Raphael at the Delhi School of Music.

He has performed in leading venues across the country. Notable venues are the Royal Opera House Mumbai, NCPA Mumbai, India International Centre, Oddbird Theatre, Institute of Cervantes (Delhi), Exhibit 320, Alliance Francais, Piano Man Jazz Club, Depot 29/48, Australian Embassy, NGMA Bangalore, TIFA (Pune), and several art exhibitions and galleries, to name a few. He has also composed for independent film, documentary, TV commercials, art installation and performance art.
Suhel Saeed Khan
Sitar

Suhel Saeed Khan is a distinguished sitar player, representing the illustrious Dilli Gharana, a lineage of Hindustani Classical Music spanning 11 unbroken generations. As one of the leading exponents of sitar from this renowned musical tradition, Suhel carries forward the legacy of his father and guru, Ustad Saeed Zafar Khan, a sitar maestro in his own right.

Suhel’s journey with the sitar began at the age of six, where he absorbed the nuances of khayals and gats, internalizing melody and rhythm even before mastering his mother tongue. This rich heritage has shaped his style, which seamlessly blends the tantrakari (instrumental virtuosity) of the sitar with the vocal-inspired phrasing of the Dilli Gharana’s gayaki ang.

An approved artist with All India Radio, Suhel is currently pursuing a Ph.D. from the Faculty of Music and Fine Arts, Delhi University, and holds a senior diploma from Prayag Sangeet Samiti. Beyond traditional boundaries, he has collaborated with several Western, Classical, Rock, and Jazz fusion bands, using both the sitar and the electric sitar (known as the Zitar). Suhel also leads his own fusion band, Suroor and Sur Chakkardaar, showcasing his versatility and commitment to bridging musical genres.
Shahanawaz Khan
Sarangi

Shahanawaz Khan, born into a family of musicians and proponent of Delhi Gharana, Shanawaz Khan belong to the family of Sarangi Maestro Late Ustad Jahan Khan, Late Ustad Chand Khan, Violinist Ustad Jahan Khan and Sharif Ahmed Bharti. Shanawaz started learning at the age of 10 from his father Late Ustad Haneef Ahmed Khan.

Presently, he is being guided and mentored by Ustad Rauf Mohammad Khan. A Sarangi artist of All India Radio, Delhi, he has accompanied many music masters like Pandit Deepak Maharaj, Ustad Manju Khan, Pandit Fateh Singh Gangani, Ustad Iqbal Ahmed Khan, Ustad Juned Ali Khan to name a few. Shanawaz ji has rendered performance in India and abroad. Presently he is working at Matri Kala Mandir.
Makrand Sanon
Percussion

Makrand Sanon is a versatile percussionist and a performing artist, who has been privileged to learn a wide range of instruments (starting from tabla, drums to djembe) and musicality throughout his journey, which began not less than 19 years ago, when he was 5. Makrand later trained in Indian Classical music at the Pracheen Kala Kendra, Chandigarh for a period of over five years. He followed this by learning Electronic Music at A.R. Rahman lead K.M. Music Conservatory, Chennai for a year.

Currently he is learning Pakhawaj under Pandit Mohan Shyam Sharma. Makrand is currently experimenting with his sound of music and collaborating with artists from authentic, fresh and unique backgrounds. A freelancer for now, Makrand plays with a few singer songwriter project from Delhi by the name Angad Katari , Azaan and Makrand, TALL-Tales His latest projects include of SHK Collective led by Ustaad Shujaat Hussain Khan. And, Aahvaan Project (an acoustic experimental storytelling).
