Santhosh Pai, best known for Photography, started with visual art, learning from senior artist U Ramesh Rao. He had created his first drawing at the age of ten and continued for a couple of decades. Pai started Photography primarily as a reference to create original art works using Acrylic medium as a preference as he could add layers to his compositions.
“I see Photography as an extension of my art practice, which includes observational sketches, drawing and paint with analogue and digital mediums.”
He had started documenting urban and rural visual links between the US and India when Pai chanced on a show of Michael Kenna, the famed English photographer known for his Zen and Minimalistic compositions. He then realised that his collections of works could relate to the latter’s works that were inspiring. His works are based on the co-existence of humans and animals in the expanse and the beauty of Nature, each captured ethereally by the artist. Mostly self-taught, Pai’s skill is in creating through fine art photography in the natural form. The Abstract elements seen is inspired by the photographic reference of ace photographer Saul Leiter and Xavier Zimbardo.
There is a stillness in the capacious and seemingly elegiac compositions, that makes the viewer ponder into introspection. His preference for black and white shots with the use of digital cameras, are captured using old Nikon lenses on Canon and Nikon brands. The collection of Black and White photographs compiled for over a decade of travels, appear as vignettes to the viewer’s eye.
