An evening of qawwali, poetry and the spirit within
We are delighted to bring the rich and vibrant tradition of Qawwali to Courtyard Koota with Sri Prahlad Singh Tipaniya and group.
Rooted in the Sufi tradition, Qawwali is much more than music. It is a centuries-old form of spiritual expression that uses poetry, rhythm, and collective singing to evoke longing, love, devotion, and celebration.
Through an interplay of voices, harmonium, percussion, and spontaneous musical dialogue, a Qawwali performance becomes a living conversation—between singers, between poetry and music, and ultimately between the listener and the self. At once meditative and exuberant, intimate and expansive, Qawwali invites us to listen not just with our ears, but with our hearts. It is often associated with entertainment and celebration—and indeed it is full of joy—but it is also a deeply contemplative art form, carrying within it the wisdom and beauty of the Sufi tradition.
We invite you to join us for an unforgettable evening of music, poetry, and shared celebration.
Padma Shri Prahlad Singh Tipaniya stands as one of India's most revered folk icons. He has spent over four decades bringing the timeless, formless (Nirgun) poetry of the 15th-century mystic Sant Kabir to global stages. Singing in the vibrant Malwi folk tradition of Madhya Pradesh, his powerful voice and rhythmic storytelling bridge ancient wisdom with modern social consciousness.Far from a solo act, Sri Tipaniya’s performances are an electrifying communal experience. He is backed by a deeply synchronized ensemble composed of family members and lifelong masters of the craft.
Accompanying Sri Prahlad Singh Tipaniya will be:
1. Ajay Tipanya – Son & Percussionist & Singer
2. Devnarayan Saroliya – Singer & Violin Maestro
3. Dharmendra Tipanya- Singer and harmonium player
4. Priyal Maheshwari - Singer and accompanying artist
5. Mayank and Himanshu Tipanya - Grandsons and torch bearers of the family tradition on khartaal and manjira
