As we are aware, Carnatic classical music is a highly evolved classical art form that has been in existence in the Southern parts of India. There have been composers and musicians whose contributions by way of compositions, raga delineations, rhythmic patterns and other aspects of manodharma sangeeta have shaped and defined the art form that exists today. The other equally vibrant Classical musical form that is practised more predominantly in the Northern landscape of Bharat is the Hindustani music tradition or Parampara. As with any creative form, the legendary practitioners and composers while upholding the highest values of their own systems, were also open to the nuances and influences of the times that they lived in. This fact comes through in a slew of compositions in Carnatic music. We are blessed to have a rich basket of musical creations by the Trinity – Saint Sri Tyagaraja Swamy, Sri Mutthuswami Dikshitar and Syama Shastri spanning the 18th and 19th centuries and other contemporary ones in more recent times. It is the endeavour of our team this evening, to highlight this delightful Convergence – Abhisaara, the highest level of harmonious integration of musical thoughts, echoes, vibrations and influences of other forms and genres which these great composers coalesced so seamlessly into their own compositions in the Carnatic tradition and made them their very own. The true testimony to these gems lies in the fact that we continue to be enthralled by these amazing crown jewels – some even after a span of more than a century, others belonging to more recent times.
