Event Description

The event celebrates the India release of Among Tigers: Fighting to Bring Back Asia’s Big Cats by Dr. K. Ullas Karanth. For over five decades, Karanth has pioneered the fierce struggle to recover wild tigers from the brink in India, and across Asia. He tells the story of the tiger itself—its incredible biology, its critical role in shaping natural habitats, and the unique place it holds in human imagination. Among Tigers is also the story of how we wound up in a world with fewer than five thousand tigers, and how, with rational actions, we can grow that population ten times. The aim is to bring the world’s most beloved feline back from the brink, while also protecting countless other life forms sheltered within its habitats across Asia. Karanth shares his adventurous real-life story: his pioneering quest to catch, radio-track and count tigers in the face dangers posed by not just wild beasts but also human adversaries. Along the way comes the hopeful realization that tiger conservation is a battle that can be won. The book is a rational roadmap on how to bring tigers back, while at the same time benefiting the society through win-win solutions, which embrace rather than shun the incredible power of science, technology, markets and sheer human enterprise. The program will be compered by Shoba Narayan, who will engage Prof Mahesh Rangarajan and Mr. Narayan Ramachandran in a conversation. Dr. Ullas Karanth will speak briefly about his work and will be interviewed by Dr. Shivasharan Someshwar. A Q&A with the audience will follow.
