An upcoming exhibition, "The Masters & The Modern: South Edition," will explore the evolution of South Indian art from the early 20th century to the contemporary era. Running from February 26 to March 31, 2025, in Bangalore, the exhibition showcases works from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh/Telangana, highlighting the interplay between tradition and innovation.
The display begins with traditional art forms, including Tanjore and Mysore paintings known for their intricate detailing and devotional iconography. It then traces the emergence of academic realism and the Madras Art Movement, which fused abstraction, symbolism, and indigenous visual languages. Rare works by influential artists such as KM Adimoolam, RB Bhaskaran, and Achuthan Kudallur will be featured.
The exhibition also explores Karnataka’s contribution to modern Indian art, showcasing artists like KK Hebbar, SM Pandit, and SG Vasudev, who balanced cultural symbolism with contemporary themes. The latter half of the 20th century saw South Indian artists experimenting with new materials and themes, addressing issues of identity, gender, caste, and environmental concerns. The show includes never-before-seen works by Jitesh Kallat, Avinash Veeraraghavan, and Gurudas Shenoy.
Emerging artists like KP Leon, Hima Hariharan, and Anand Bekwad are also featured, highlighting their innovative approaches that blend tradition with modernity. The exhibition serves as a dialogue between past and present, showcasing how South Indian artists reinterpret tradition while embracing contemporary practices.
