Join us for an evening of music and memories, as we experience the rich legacy of the illustrious Dr. Prabha Atre, doyenne of the Kirana Gharana!

Anant Prabha is a heartfelt homage to Swarayoginee, who excelled in various streams of music ranging from being an academician, researcher, composer, author, guru, and most importantly, a reformer. Atre was also a pioneer in popularising the Indian classical music in the West, giving her first performance abroad in 1969.

Join Padmini Rao, one of Prabhaji’s senior-most students, as she takes you on a journey, sharing personal experiences interspersed with musical interludes. A journey, through the Guru-Shishya landscape as it formed and evolved over the years. Get an inside glimpse into the world of Prabhaji’s approach to the fascinating process of musical creativity and development of the artistic temperament, which cemented her position as one of the foremost exponents in the world of Hindustani Classical Music.

This concert is held in remembrance of Dr. Prabha Atre, marking one year since her passing on January 13, 2024.

Padmini Rao
Vocals

Smt. Padmini Rao is a distinguished exponent of the Kirana Gharana in Hindustani classical music. A senior disciple of the late Padma Vibhushan Dr. Prabha Atre, she has been associated with her guru for over 35 years. Beginning her musical journey under Pandit Manohar Otavakar and later training in sitar with Mrs. Pramila Dagar, Padmini eventually devoted herself to vocal music, undergoing rigorous training with the late Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Khan Dagar for over a decade.

Renowned for her expertise in both pure classical and light classical forms like thumris and bhajans, she combines performance with academics, conducting workshops and lectures on topics such as music appreciation, the time theory of music, and khayal singing. She has performed extensively across India at prestigious venues, including the Tansen Sangeet Samaroh, Sawai Gandharva Mahotsav, NCPA, and Jaipur Literature Festival, as well as internationally in countries like the USA, France, Germany, and Australia, including performances at Ivy League universities such as MIT and the University of Pennsylvania.

A recipient of high praise from critics, Padmini has been lauded for her refinement, emotive performances, and dedication to her gharana’s legacy. Beyond music, she holds a chemistry degree with honors, a postgraduate degree in music, and has worked in theatre and language studies, being fluent in six Indian languages along with French and Dutch. An empaneled ICCR artist, she has collaborated on projects like “Music for Life,” composed music for educational programs, and translated over 500 compositions of her guru into English.

Her illustrious career spans over three decades, marked by accolades, global recognition, and a profound contribution to Indian classical music.
Gurumurthy Vaidya
Tabla

Gurumurthy Vaidya, fondly called “Tabla Guru” is one of the leading musicians in the world of rhythm. He belongs to the rich traditions of Ustad Ahmed Jan Tirakhwa Saheb. Born into a musically inclined family, Gurumurthy hails from the culturally rich belt in the Western Ghats of Karnataka called Yallapura. At a tender age, Gurumurthy showed a keen interest in music. Gurumurthy remembers his childhood of trying to understand the complex rhythmic patterns of Yakshagana. He started his initial lessons in Classical Tabla from Pandit G G Hegde, Yallapura, and later went on to get additional training from the well-known Pandit Basavaraj Bendigere of Dharwad. Later became a disciple of legendary master Pandit Ravindra Yavagal and continues to take guidance from the master.
Madhusoodan Bhat
Harmonium

Madhusoodan Bhat started learning music from Pt. MP Hegde Padigere for vocal and harmonium lessons in Sirsi, Karnataka. Later, he went on to take advanced training in harmonium solo under Pt. Dr. Ravindra Katoti, one of the only ‘A’ graded Hindustani style harmonium artists of the country. Under his able guidance and with Madhusoodan’s dedication to the art, he is continuing to advance. At present, Madhusudhan has an Akashvani B high grade.

Madhusudhan has accompanied famous vocalists like Pt. M. Venkatesh Kumar, Pt.Ganapathi Bhat Hasanagi, Pt. Vinayak Torvi, Pt. Parameshwar Hegde, Pt. Ramesh Narayan, Vidhushi PU Sarkel (Rajkot), Vidhushi Vidya Rao (Delhi),  Vidhushi Adithi Upadhyay, Vidhushi Lalit J Rao,  Pt. Ravindra Yavagal, Shri Yashavanth Vaishnav for lehera , and many more.
