The glazed architectural ceramics of the Indian subcontinent, mostly produced during the Sultanate and Mughal periods, are remarkable for their variety of design and technique. It could be argued that the artistic inventiveness, seen in tiles produced in this region rivals, and even surpasses those that are seen in the great production centres of Iran, Central Asia and Turkey. Sadly, what is left today are fragmentary remains as a result of the ravages of time, climate, vandalism and neglect. Join us for an illustrated talk, as Arthur Millner highlights the key themes of his recent book, Indian Tiles, showing examples of the various regional types. Arthur Milner Arthur Millner is a consultant in Islamic, Indian, Himalayan and South-East Asian art, based in London. He studied at Queens’ College, Cambridge and SOAS, University of London. He started his career at Sotheby’s and later had a gallery in London. He has spent the last fifteen years working independently, advising collectors and auction rooms, as well as lecturing and writing. He has written two books: Damascus Tiles (2015) and, most recently, Indian Tiles (2021).
