Event Description

“Ashareeravāni - Sound without body”, an Indo-Japanese co-production between the Japan Foundation New Delhi and Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts, Bengaluru, will be premiered on 17th January 2023 at 7:30pm at the Bangalore International Centre.

This triple bill dance performance will feature award winning choreographers and dancers Ryu Suzuki from Dance Base Yokohama (Japan) and Hemabharathy Palani from Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts, Bengaluru(India).

“Ashareeravani – Sound without body” marks the third phase of project “-scape”, bringing the artists from Japan and India together physically in one space for the first time. Project “-scape” started in 2021 during the pandemic, as an Indo-Japanese collaboration between choreographers/dancers - Hemabharathy Palani (Bengaluru, India) and Ryu Suzuki (Yokohama, Japan). Transcending the challenges of geographies, travel restrictions and confinement during the pandemic, the first edition of -scape was performed by Hemabharathy along with a digital manifestation of Ryu.

In this triple bill production, the dancers will perform in-person for the first time. They have been working together intensively at Attakkalari to produce a new duet titled “Interlude” featuring them both. Apart from “Interlude”, the evening will also feature “never thought it would” a solo by Ryu Suzuki, and “-scape” a solo by Hemabharathy Palani developed collaboratively with Ryu Suzuki.

The programme details: (1) “never thought it would” performed by Ryu Suzuki A solo work created by Ryu Suzuki, reflecting on the artist’s life. This work was co- produced by Dance Base Yokohama and Aichi Prefectural Art Theatre (Japan). (2) "-scape” performed by Hemabharathy Palani An Indo-Japanese multimedia work coproduced by Japan Foundation and Attakkalari. It explores vignettes from the lives of two individuals who have never met offline. (3) “Interlude” performed by Hemabharathy Palani and Ryu Suzuki “Interlude” marks the long-awaited meeting of Ryu Suzuki (Japan) and Hemabharathy Palani (India). It will reflect on the spaciousness that the pandemic afforded them, and highlight the value of contact and personal connection.
