Attakkalari celebrates 25 years of pioneering work in contemporary dance with a Silver Jubilee Gala Performance on Saturday, 31 January 2026, from 6.00 pm onwards, at the Prestige Centre for Performing Arts (PCPA), Bengaluru.
The evening presents an exciting double bill: the site-specific celebration Geometry of Becoming in the outdoor spaces of PCPA, followed by a proscenium presentation of the internationally acclaimed Sonnet of Samsara within the theatre.
Geometry of Becoming
Marking the ceremonial opening of Attakkalari’s Silver Jubilee, Geometry of Becoming is conceived as a “memory in motion.” This site-responsive work brings together professional dancers, students, and community participants to honour transformation, collaboration, and creative continuity.
Performed in the public spaces in front of PCPA, the work speaks directly to Attakkalari’s long standing relationship with Namma Bengaluru and the many artistic ecologies the organisation has nurtured over twenty-five years, both locally and globally.
Geometry of Becoming draws inspiration from the sacred geometry of Rangoli, the ritual floor art created daily at domestic thresholds and embodies ideas of welcome and renewal through rhythm, and pattern. The choreography balances structure and improvisation, allowing form to emerge and dissolve. In doing so, the work reflects the nature of performance itself as a shared and time bound act shaped with cultural practices.
The 25-minute choreography unfolds in five distinct sections, imagined as tributaries that carry distinct geometric forms, movement vocabularies, and sonic textures. Original choreography by Jay and sound score by M. D. Pallavi brings together varied genres, poetic fragments that evoke shifts in time and mood, and musical structures rooted in Indian traditions. As these sections merge, they form a multilayered narrative that reflects Bengaluru as a city shaped by movement and reflection.
Sonnet of Samsara
The second half of the evening features Sonnet of Samsara, a 60-minute, visually arresting production that meditates on cycles of existence, desire, and transformation. It was created in response to the climate emergency, environmental degradation, unchecked technological growth, social fragmentation and conflicts. The work reflects the shared anxieties and aspirations of contemporary societies worldwide.
Inspired by Joseph Campbell’s writings on myth and time, Sonnet of Samsara traces a symbolic journey from childhood to adulthood. The choreography draws from Kalarippayattu, Bharatanatyam, Yoga, and contemporary dance, and brings ritual, mythic imagery, stylised movement, and everyday gestures into an immersive, multi-layered experience. Themes of nature, migration, conflict, sustainability, and mental wellbeing run through the work, forgrounding a profound call to remember humanity’s interconnectedness.
Commissioned by the Serendipity Arts Festival, supported by the British Council, and produced by Attakkalari with Kinetika Design Studio (London), the work features an evocative score by M. D. Pallavi, alongside a Mizhavu ensemble, additional music by Kunihiko Matsuo, striking costumes by Aloka D’Souza, and imaginative lighting by Shymon Chelad.
Following acclaimed performances across India and tours of the UK and Italy, with further international tours planned in 2026, this Silver Jubilee Gala invites audiences to engage with Attakkalari’s journey while attending its present moments. It also gestures towards the organisation's future through the forthcoming Centre for Innovation in Performing Arts.
A Living Legacy
Attakkalari’s 25-year journey stands as a testament to what sustained vision, and collective effort can achieve over time. From a single idea, it has grown into a force that has shaped Bengaluru’s contemporary dance landscape and expanded the scope of somatic practice in India
As Attakkalari enters its next chapter, it extends an invitation to artists, thinkers, educators, institutions, supporters, and citizens to participate in shaping this future. The work continues. The body moves. The city listens. And the future of performing arts takes shape, here, in Bengaluru.
