Queer Comics Edition
The opposite of a workshop, GaysiFamily’s Bad Drawing Party in collaboration with MAP invites you to break the rules that we’ve been told to follow as adults. Here the only rule is: draw badly. Don’t conform. Break the rules. Make something that makes no sense. Dream the intangible and turn into a comic.
It’s a deliberate subversion, because much of what we’ve been taught about art, self-expression, and storytelling is rooted in getting it ‘right’. It’s always been about following the binary and dominant definitions of beauty, bodies, family, relationships, etc.
Allowing ourselves to be ‘bad’ then becomes essential in the journey to writing an alternate future that’s not confined by rules made by only a select few, for a world where a spectrum of identities, narratives, and intersections exist.
Comics enable us to channel all these feelings into a tangible and tactile medium that allows you to show and tell at the same time. Whether you are a writing person or a drawing person, comics invite you in. At this party, you can do just one of those and make your own bad comics. Because what’s good or bad art anyway if the goal is self-expression?
About the Speaker:
Priya Dali is a work-in-progress human, illustrator, and creative director of Gaysi Family, an LGBTQIA+ community platform dedicated to making queer art, culture, and entertainment a part of the everyday landscape of India. Priya is a Forbes India 30 Under 30 awardee and the co-founder of Are You Serious?, a creative studio working at the intersection of design and social impact. In her free time, she deludes herself with sapphic love stories, dreams of making queer children’s books, and draws bad jokes.
About Gaysi Family:
Gaysi Family is India’s largest creative platform for the LGBTQIA+ community and home to our queer-led creative studio, Are You Serious? We bring together the beauty, complexity and diversity of desi queer culture, from conversations, commentary and stories to the artists shaping it. What began as the Gaysi Family blog in 2008 has evolved into a multi-format space for queer desis, spanning large-scale cultural festivals, theatre productions, bar nights, open mics, and our Instagram and YouTube channels. Through it all, we’re making queer culture part of India’s everyday landscape and building a thriving community of Gen Z and millennial queer folks and allies across the country.
