Event Description

off/BEAT is a new kind of festival- a way to redefine the arts and culture experience by taking them beyond traditional venues and into Bengaluru’s historic, heritage-rich spaces.

During these two weeks, we will illuminate the National Gallery of Modern Art, Panchavati, Sabha and more, and hold intimate dance, music and theatre performances with them as the backdrop. We invite you to join us in exploring and engaging with the city’s rich legacy in a fresh, immersive way.

About the Performance

Nazakat means delicacy- the performance is an exploration of Ganga Jamni tehzeeb through the dance form Kathak and the poetic verse of Bindaddin Maharaj, Amir Khusrau, Momin and Bulle Shah. Ganga Jamni implies a synchretism across faiths, of languages and cultures. The perfromance points to greater human yearning, beyond divisiveness, holding the promise of friendship and play.

About the Artist

Performer choreographer, writer, curator, teacher  and founder of beej,  Sanjukta Wagh has trained extensively under Rajashree Shirke in Kathak and  Pandit Murli Manohar Shukla in Hindustani Music. Her engagement with theatre honed by Chetan Datar and Navarasa Sadhana training with G Venu, her year-long experience at the Trinity Laban school of Dance, London and barps training with Navtej Johar , have led to her interdisciplinary and exploratory mode of work.

Sanjukta has developed a unique language of dance theatre that uses the Kathak language to build on and draws contemporary dance, theatre, literature and hindustani music.  She composes original music and sound scores for her work.

Her interdisciplinary research on movement improvisation as a studio-based practice and as performance along with her exploration of dance in real time has led to several collaborative performances and findings which she has been sharing in workshops around the country.

Sanjukta’s critically acclaimed performances have led her to several festivals across the globe.
