Bhoomija and Natanakairali present Mrchhakatikam in Kutiyattam
Mṛcchakatikam, or The Little Clay Cart, is one of the most human, vibrant plays in Sanskrit literature—filled with wit, romance, and drama. In this production, G. Venu—legendary Kutiyattam exponent and director—brings Shudraka’s masterpiece to life through Kutiyattam, one of the world’s oldest surviving theatre traditions.
Kutiyattam unfolds the inner lives of characters with unmatched depth and grace. The story centres on Charudatta, a noble Brahmin merchant, and Vasantasena, a courtesan of great beauty and heart. Around them swirl gamblers, thieves, Buddhist monks, elephant keepers, and revolutionaries, in a city alive with intrigue and emotion.
This is no fusion. Venu and the Natanakairali troupe interpret Mṛcchakatikam fully within the grammar and aesthetics of Kutiyattam—its gestures, music, and rhythm. The production, supported by Bhoomija Trust, presents a rare chance for audiences to witness a classical Sanskrit play in an ancient form that still resonates today.
