The ensemble features 37 young artistes (below the age of 17), handpicked by Aneesh ji and their gurus, from across the country, brought together expressly for the performance. These young torchbearers come from rich musical legacies in West Bengal, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Manipur, Rajasthan, and Goa – little surprise then, that they’re masters already of their chosen forms, be it folk or classical, vocal or instrumental! Dholkis, dhol tasha, kansalem, halgi, ghumat, sambal, mridangam, ghatam, tabla, khanjira, Manganiyar singers, Hindustani vocalists, and more – all on one stage. The concert is also tied together beautifully by Gopal Datt’s anchoring - the renowned theatre actor scripts a narration that connects the various dots of “Kamaal Dhamaal”, bringing the story together and alive on the stage as the dynamic Sutradhar. Curator and Artistic Director Aneesh Pradhan’s Note: “Kamaal Dhamaal” is the coming together of young performers to celebrate various drumming traditions from India. It represents India’s cultural diversity as reflected through her music, particularly through percussion traditions. For several centuries, these traditions have run parallel, have intersected or have worked in isolation. Significantly, they have not threatened each other and have in fact lived in harmony. Drummers in Kamaal Dhamaal come from various parts of the country to weave a tapestry of rhythm with other musicians. While the focus of Kamaal Dhamaal is on percussion traditions, the performance is equally grounded in melody and song-text.
