Event Description

World-renowned Mridangam maestro Guru Karaikudi Mani will lead a percussion ensemble in concert. The ensemble features prominent Carnatic musicians Bangalore Amrit (Khanjira), Giridhar Udupa (Ghatam) and Pramath Kiran (Morsing). The concert will take place at 7 PM on Sat, 30 Apr 2022 at Chowdiah Memorial Hall.

Regarded as one of the best Mridangists of all time, Vidwan Guru Karaikudi Mani has largely been responsible for taking the mridangam to the global stage and introducing it as a solo instrument in its own right. A student of Carnatic music greats Karaikudi Sri Rangu Iyengar, Sri T R Harihara Sharma and Sri K M Vaidyanathan, he revolutionized the Carnatic music field with his ‘Thani Avarthanam’ concerts – a concept followed by many percussionists today. In addition to a Sangeet Natak Academy Award and several national-level accolades, Guru Karaikudi Mani also has a Bani (style) inspired by his style of playing the Mridangam.

Bangalore Amrit Nataraj (Khanjira) studied under Vidwan Sri M Vasudeva Rao (Mridangam), Sri A V Anand (Mridangam), and Vidwan Sri G Harishankar (Khanjira). The youngest Khanjira artiste to receive the All India Radio ‘A-Top Grade’, he has many noted collaborations to his credit, including working with Oscar winner A R Rahman. His achievements in Khanjira-playing have earned him the title ‘Brand Ambassador of Khanjira’.

Giridhar Udupa’s (Ghatam) journey into Carnatic music started under the tutelage of his father, Vidwan Ullur Nagendra Udupa, and continued under Vidhushi Sukkanya Ramgopal and Vidwan V Suresh. In a career spanning over three decades, Giridhar Udupa has performed in over 50 countries and collaborated with several artistes around the world.

Pramath Kiran (Morsing) is a student of maestros Pt. Udayraj Karpur (Tabla) and Vidwan Anoor Ananthakrishna Sharma (Morsing). A master of several percussion instruments, Pramath Kiran has many collaborations and honours to his credit. He is known for blending of traditional playing and modern accompaniment styles, and incorporating them into world music.
