Event Description

Bengaluru audiences are in for a rare and unforgettable experience as Mṛcchakatikam—the beloved Sanskrit classic—is brought to life in the magnificent performance tradition of Kutiyattam, the world’s oldest living theatre form. Directed by G. Venu, this production by Natanakairali is a landmark moment in contemporary classical theatre.

Unlike other Sanskrit plays rooted in divine mythologies and royal intrigues, Mṛcchakatikam (The Little Clay Cart) brims with vivid, humane characters—lovers, gamblers, thieves, monks, and revolutionaries—set in a bustling ancient city. This play is a celebration of love, justice, politics, and human folly. It is earthy, elegant, and endlessly relevant.

Cast: Sooraj Nambiar, Pothiyil Ranjith Chakyar, Kapila Venu, Margi Sajeev Narayanan Chakyar, Saritha Krishnakumar, Kalamandalam Jishnu Prathap, Nepathya Sreehari Chakyar, Sankar Venkateswaran, Margi Anjana Sajeev, Gurukulam Tharun and Aran Kapila.

On the Mizhavu will be Kalamandalam Rajeev, Kalamandalam Hariharan, Kalamandalam Narayanan Nambiar  and Kalamandalam Vineesh.

On Edakka there will be Kalanilayam Unnikrishnan.

Gurukulam Athulya is on the Thaalam and the makeup artistes are Kalanilayam Haridas and Kalamandalam Vyshak.

With live mizhavu percussion, powerful abhinaya, and English subtitles, this is Kutiyattam at its most accessible and moving. The performance is supported by Bhoomija Trust, known for its commitment to presenting transformative Indian classical and folk arts.
