Event Description

Bhoomija presents the highly acclaimed ‘Āhuti’ to Bangalore audiences this month. The show is a collaboration between world-renowned dance companies, Nrityagram (Bangalore, India) and The Chitrasena Dance Company (Sri Lanka). ‘Āhuti’ will be staged at 7 PM on Sun, 25 Sep 2022 at Chowdiah Memorial Hall. The magical collaboration will feature Odissi and Sri Lanka’s Kandyan dance style. The entire performance is set to rhythms from both countries. The music, composed by Pandit Raghunath Panigrahi is delivered live by a stunning orchestra. The piece’s Artistic Director, Choreographer, and Sound Designer is Surupa Sen with Chitrasena’s Heshma Wignaraja as the Associate Choreographer. Surupa Sen also leads the manjira for the show. ‘Āhuti’ premiered in 2019 to rave reviews. The piece went on to perform to full houses across several countries. It will now be performed in the city again after three years, before it heads to the international festival circuit. The piece is the second collaboration between the two companies after the highly acclaimed ‘Samhara’ (2012). The Nrityagram Dance Ensemble is among the leading dance companies in India, with over 25 years of teaching and performances to its credit. With highly acclaimed shows all around the world, the ensemble is now a reputed international name as well. Celebrated dancer Surupa Sen is the ensemble’s Artistic Director. A prominent name in the world of classical dance, Surupa Sen’s first steps into the world of Odissi were taken under the tutelage of the legendary Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra. Her education in the form continued under Guru Protima Gauri, Guru Ratikant Mahapatra, and Guru Bichitranandan Swain. She was the first student to graduate from Nrityagram’s prestigious dance programme and is now one of the Ensemble's leading artistes. The Chitrasena Dance Company is among Sri Lanka’s oldest and most distinguished dance companies.
