Event Description

Bhoomija presents “Triveni”, an evening of music featuring international music icons Ustad Zakir Hussain, Vidushi Kala Ramnath, and Vidushi Jayanthi Kumaresh. “Triveni”, meaning “confluence”, celebrates Indian classical music through the coming together of the tabla, violin, and the veena. The show seamlessly stitches together the varied musicalities of the three virtuosos and their instruments, resulting in an engaging and melodious dialogue between Carnatic and Hindustani traditions. "Triveni" comes to India for the first time, after having toured the US extensively and performed a unique concert in Singapore before. "Triveni" is brought to Bangalore by Bhoomija Trust in association with Taneira, a Tata company that is working with weavers across the country to revive the rich tradition of Indian handlooms. Ustad Zakir Hussain As one of the most accomplished and celebrated tabla players of our time, Ustad Zakir Hussain needs little introduction. In a career spanning over six decades, Zakir ji has established himself as an influential and esteemed international icon, with phenomenal work in the fields of composition and musical production also to his credit.

The foremost disciple of his father, the legendary Ustad Allarakha, Zakir ji was a child prodigy who accompanied some of India’s most prominent classical musicians on tours across the world. He is largely credited for elevating the status of the tabla nationally and internationally, as well as having developed a dialogue between musicians of North and South India.   His unparalleled contributions and groundbreaking collaborations have earned Zakir ji several prestigious awards, such as the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, the Padma Shri, the Padma Bhushan, the Grammy Award for Best World Music Album (1992), and the United States National Endowment for the Arts’ National Heritage Fellowship.

Vidushi Kala Ramnath Among the world’s finest and most inspirational instrumentalists, violin virtuoso Kala Ramnath’s education began under the tutelage of her grandfather, Vidwan A. Narayan Iyer, and continued under the legendary Pandit Jasraj. A common name in prestigious music festivals across the world, Kala Ramnath has performed in several nationally and internationally renowned venues, such as the Sydney Opera House, London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall, Carnegie Hall, and the Edinburgh Music Festival.

Her rich and varied repertoire includes several celebrated collaborations with exponents of different music styles, from western classical and jazz to traditional African music and Flamenco. The first Indian violinist to be featured in The Strad, Kala Ramnath’s work has been featured in the Grammy-nominated “Miles from India” project, the Grammy-winning “In 27 Pieces”, and Hollywood hits such as “Blood Diamond”.   Her contributions to Hindustani classical music earned her the illustrious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, in addition to the Rashtriya Kumar Gandharva Sanman, Sur Ratna, and Pandit Jasraj Gaurav Puraskar. She is also “A Top”-grade artiste and was among the youngest artistes to receive this honour.

Vidushi Jayanthi Kumaresh Artiste, composer, researcher, collaborator, pioneer, educator, and researcher, Dr. Jayanthi Kumaresh dons many hats, the most important of these being an internationally-recognized torch bearer for the Saraswathi veena.   Jayanthi’s rich lineage of music spans generations, with her musical education starting at the tender age of three, under her mother Vidushi Lalgudi R. Rajalakshmi, and continuing under the renowned Vidushi Padmavathi Ananthagopalan and veena virtuoso Dr. S. Balachander.

Her decades-long career has seen her perform at several prestigious festivals and venues, such as the Darbar Festival London, the San Francisco Jazz Festival, the Adelaide Music Festival, the United Nations, and the Darwin Music Festival, accompanying some of the most reputed artistes in the music world.
