Event Description

Date: Sun, 17 Sep 2023 Time: 7 PM Venue: MLR Convention Centre, JP Nagar Age Limit: 6 and above A vocal-centric performance that showcases folk and classical vocal traditions, “Singing Into the Future”, at Bhoomija’s Jackfruit 2023, is conceptualized and directed by Shubha Mudgal. The concert features child prodigies Rahul Vellal (Carnatic Classical), Chotu Khan (Manganiyar), Dnyaneshwari Ghadge (Hindustani Classical), and Rohan Das (Bengali folk).

Director Shubha Mudgal’s Note: Traditional music in India has always drawn on nature, seasons, diurnal and nocturnal cycles for inspiration. With climate change, extreme weather conditions, global warming and natural calamities bringing havoc and destruction to our neighbourhoods, now would seem an appropriate time to sing to Mother Nature and Mother Earth and ask for her benediction and grace. Four glorious young voices representing Indian classical and folk music come together in this specially curated performance, each singing repertoire that represents the respect accorded to nature in traditional forms of music.

About the Artistes:

Rahul Vellal: Disciple of Ranjani and Gayatri:

Bangalore-based singer and musician Rahul Vellal started his foray into Carnatic music at the tender age of 4. A student of Carnatic vocal traditions under renowned musicians Kalavathy Avadhoot, Ranjani and Gayatri, Suchethan Rangaswamy, and Kuldeep M Pai, Rahul is a familiar name in the Carnatic music circles, known for his stellar concerts both nationally and internationally. Apart from being an accomplished vocalist, Rahul is also a skilled mridangist and pianist. He is pursuing the mridangam under Kulur U Jayachandra Rao and is also training in Western Piano (from the Trinity School of Music) under the tutelage of Abhishek N. Some of Rahul’s notable achievements include the "Global Child Prodigy Awards 2020" in "Singing" Category, the "Shanmukhananda M S Subbulakshmi Fellowship 2018" for Carnatic Vocal, Deccan Herald’s “Change Maker 2022” award, Byju’s “Young Genius” award, recognition as one of the “Top 100 Global Child Prodigies of the World” by the GCP Award Group, and being the record holder in the India Book of Records as the “Youngest Carnatic Musician to Have Performed in 7 Countries”.

Dnyaneshwari Ghadge: Disciple of Apoorva Gokhale:

Dnyaneshwari began humming music at the age of 3. Her parents identified her inclination to music and decided to help her pursue it. She was first trained by her father, Mr. Ganesh Gadage. Later, she started learning from Apoorva Ji Gokhale, and continues to do so under her guidance. Dnyaneshwari has participated and shone in multiple competitions, most prominently Sa Re Ga Ma in 2022, where she was the second winner. She has also been awarded the “Swar Aasha” Award by maestro Asha Bhosale.

Chotu Khan: Disciple of Gafur Khan:

Hailing from Jaisalmer’s Kunda village, Chotu Khan, all of 7 years old, is among the youngest torchbearers of Rajasthan’s rich Manganiar tradition and oral heritage! The child prodigy is descended from a lineage steeped in artistic brilliance - his musical prowess can be traced back to his great grandfather Jiya Khan, a renowned poet and Manganiar artiste who laid the foundation of the family’s legacy, and his grandfather Gafur Khan, one of the few male singers to uphold the age-old tradition of performing on the Dhol. Starting his musical journey at the tender age of 4, Chotu was eventually taken under the wing of music curator and cultural expert Govind Singh Bhati, whose mentoring has been instrumental in nurturing, shaping, and refining Chotu’s natural talent.

Rohan Das: Disciple of Ayan Banerjee and Tanushree Das:

A rising star in the music world, Rohan Das is best known for wowing audiences and judges alike, week after week, with his stellar, versatile performances on Sony TV’s national-level singing reality show “Superstar Singer” Season 2 (Indian Idol Junior). Becoming a final-round participant in the show made Rohan a household name, in addition to opening up a host of opportunities - singing for Bengali films “Haami 2” and “Raktabeej” (directed by Nadita Roy and Shiboprosad Mukherjee), various solo vocal performances on CN News, CTVN, Aakash Aath, and a host of live musical shows, and most importantly, performing with famous folk band Dohar on many occasions. Trained in Hindustani Classical vocal traditions under Pandit Ajay Chakraborty’s tutelage and in folk under the guidance of Ayan Banerjee and Tanushree Das (Rohan’s mother), Rohan is an artiste to watch!
