About the Artist

Santosh Mahale is a fine artist originally from India, now residing in Melbourne, Australia. His art is deeply inspired by his passion for exploring new places, drawing from elements such as cartography, heritage architecture, local cuisine, and the omnipresence of birds. Each of his works captures the essence of a location on a single canvas, weaving together the rich narratives of the places he portrays. A signature element of Santosh’s work is his use of a bird’s eye perspective, offering sweeping views of cityscapes and landscapes. This unique approach is a cornerstone of his Birdseye exhibition series.

The creation of each piece begins with extensive research, including travel experiences, photographs, and historical references. Santosh carefully selects 1-4 bird species to serve as symbolic ambassadors of each location, weaving them seamlessly into his compositions. Santosh’s process is both structured and intuitive. He begins with a foundational geometric pattern linked to the place’s identity—whether it’s the brickwork of Melbourne or prominent cultural icons in his Indian cityscapes. Geographical features like coastlines, water bodies, parks, and roads are then meticulously outlined and layered into the work.

Through his art, Santosh aims to evoke a deep emotional connection in his viewers, mirroring the joy and passion he experiences during the creative process. His work encourages a closer look at the finer details of a place—the patterns, textures, and stories that are often overlooked. Ultimately, he hopes to inspire a sense of appreciation and stewardship, encouraging the preservation of the natural and cultural heritage that defines each location.
