Event Description

Rare Tribal Carpets – A Collectors Perspective

The world of carpets is full of mystery and jargon that is often confusing and intimidating. Ram ‘Danny’ Mehra gives us an introduction to rare tribal carpets from nomadic tents and villages of Central Asia and the Caucasus mountains – the exotic region through which old caravans travelled between Europe and China.

The session will be an informal presentation from the perspective of a passionate collector, aimed at demystifying this beautiful art form and hopefully making it more understandable to the audience. Topics covered will include carpet names; tribal groups that wove them; the geographies they lived in; the materials, weaving techniques and iconographies they used; and some thoughts on their economic value.

Speakers

Danny Mehra grew up in India and lived in various parts of the world during his corporate career. This hobby is his honest mid-life crisis…while some men buy a red sports car, Danny hunts for old carpets as his cure for aging!

The common thread in Danny’s collection is his relentless search for perfect imperfection…visually striking features that set his carpets apart from commercial products. His carpets have been exhibited in the US, Europe and India and featured in many press stories.

Danny, his wife Renuka and their pet babies Luri and Tulu now live in Bangalore. Both babies are named after tribal carpets!
