Event Description

Dave Brown is a professional artist whose practice ranges across painting, sculpture and political cartooning.

Born in 1957, Dave grew up in south east London. In 1980 he graduated with a BA Hons in Fine Art from Leeds University, before going on to teach art, while also continuing his own practice

In 1989 he won The Sunday Times Political Cartoon Competition, and subsequently worked as a freelance illustrator and cartoonist. In 1996 he took up a full-time post as chief editorial cartoonist of The Independent, for which he continues to work. He is particularly known for his series 'Rogues' Gallery' which appears in The Independent's Saturday edition. Satirising a current news story, these cartoons also pastiche famous paintings and appearwithin a mock gold frame.

His cartoons have won numerous awards including Press Awards Cartoonist of the Year 2013, Political Cartoonist of the Year 2004 and 2019, and Political Cartoon of the Year 2003, 2006, 2010 and 2012. He has exhibited widely both in Britain and abroad, and his work is held in several major collections. Since 2020 he has been dedicating more time to painting and sculpture. In November 2021 his bronze portrait bust of James Gillray, known as the 'father of the political cartoon', was unveiled at The Cartoon Museum in central London.

Dave lives in north London, where he also has his studio.
