Event Description

A trio of accomplished musicians are coming together for the first time in recital. Bangalore-based baritone Rahul Bharadwaj and Chennai-based countertenor, Subin Mathai are accompanied by Mumbai-based Steinway artist Nadine Crasto onpPiano. The program is an exploration of the interaction between text and harmony in Art song. Chance encounters with poems set in distinct styles led to searches for more such instances. This set of juxtapositions could offer insight into how meaning is conveyed in music. Composers cited include Brahms, Schumann and Debussy. The duets in various styles from Schumann to Vaughan Williams offer an opportunity to experience arrangements for baritone and countertenor, an unusual sonority. The piano, especially in the Art song, emerges as a collaborative storyteller in its own right. As the third voice in this narrative, it interprets and amplifies the emotions embedded in the poetry, providing a foundation for the vocalists to soar. Supported by: Performers Rahul Bharadwaj Singer Rahul Bharadwaj is an Indian baritone based in Bangalore. Originally trained in Hindustani Classical vocal traditions, Rahul went on to attain a degree in Vocal Performance in 2011 in Michigan and performs concert music, with a focus on art song and oratorio repertoire. Apart from a number of voice and piano recitals with pianist Nadine Crasto, over the years, Rahul was a featured soloist in Stuti Chorus production of Handel’s Messiah in February 2022. He has regularly performed at the annual Ketevan and Monte Music Festivals in Goa. His opera roles include Melibeo in Giving Voice Society’s production of Haydn’s La fedeltà premiata at the Mumbai Opera House, the Count in Cimarosa’s Il Matrimonio Segreto and the Sorcerer in Purcell’s Dido and Aenes. Since 2012, he has been a featured soloist at the Annual Con Brio Festival at the National Centre for the Performing Arts since 2012. Recent performances include solos in the Brahms Requiem and Handel’s Messiah. In addition to performance, Rahul also trains vocal students and recently facilitated an 8 week voice excellence program with the Indian Music Experience, Bangalore. Subin Sebastian Mathai Singer Subin Sebastian Mathai was born in Mumbai, India. He is an alumnus of the prestigious Royal Academy of Music, London. He has performed the role of Johnny Chrome in Britten’s The Little Sweep in the first all Indian cast opera production. Subin has collaborated with the Symphony Orchestra of India under the baton of conductor, Martyn Brabbyns on the decennial anniversary gala performance along with other Indian Artists. His versatile vocal range has also resulted in him being offered the Contralto solo for Haydn’s Missa In tempore Belli and soprano solos for Maunder’s Olivet to Calvery and Dubois’ Seven Last Words of Christ. He has also performed scenes from operas and sang the roles of Serse, Rinaldo, Arcane & Teseo. In a newly commissioned opera by Piers Connor Kennedy, Cain and Able, he essayed the role of the Angel. In collaboration with the Academy’s Historical Performance department, Subin has played the role of Cupid in Blow’s Venus and Adonis at the Duke’s and Raynham Halls. Subin is a recipient of the Esther Hulbert Award, Inlaks Shivdasani Scholarship and the Olga and Jules Craen Laureateship. He has worked and studied with some of the leading experts in the field of early music & historical performance – Michael Chance CBE, Robert Costin, Deborah York, Daniel Tayler, Lynn Dawson, Elizabeth Kenny, Mary Collings & Margaret Faultless to name a few. Additionally, he has also studied with Caitlin Hulcup, Patricia Rozario OBE, Ian Partridge CBE, Anna Tilbrook & Minaish Doctor. Subin is a member of faculty at the KM Music Conservatory, Chennai, India. Nadine Crasto Pianist Young Steinway Artist Nadine Crasto graduated in 2015 with a Master of Arts Degree in Piano Performance at the Royal Academy of Music, London, studying under Colin Stone. She studied the harpsichord and performed anachronistic chamber works on various historical instruments during her studies in London and has been performing at solo and chamber music concerts in London, Bangladesh, Mumbai, Goa, Kolkata, Mysore, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Delhi and Pune. She has performed at several master classes and piano workshops conducted by Kathryn Stott,Tatiana Sarkissova, Colin Stone, Mark Troop, Paul Stewart, Christopher Norton, Peter Mack, Scott MacBride Smith, Nelita True, Stephen Kovacevich, Marialena Fernandes, Parvesh Java and many others. In her spare time Nadine enjoys doing puzzles, yoga, cooking, singing, playing the French Horn and entertaining her four cats.
