Event Description

Introduction
Have you walked past a tree every day but never really noticed it? In today’s fast-paced life, we are often losing connection with nature. Despite being surrounded by trees, we barely notice or appreciate them around us — a phenomenon referred to as tree blindness. They exist as a background in our daily lives, and due to limited interaction with green spaces, there is an increasing nature deficit disorder.

This workshop addresses this disconnect by fostering awareness and appreciation of urban trees. Through interactive activities, discussions, and outdoor exploration, participants will develop a deeper connection with trees and understand their ecological, cultural, and personal significance.

What does the course offer?
The workshop provides engaging experiences combining indoor discussions, outdoor tree exploration, and hands-on activities. Participants will learn basic tree identification skills, explore cultural folklore and personal connections with trees. They will understand the role of urban trees in reducing air pollution, supporting biodiversity and promoting wellbeing. A blend of science and storytelling, the goal of this workshop is to provide participants with a holistic experience combining ecological understanding, cultural significance, and personal engagement.

Who should attend?
City residents, members of Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), environmental activists, NGOs, educators, and anyone interested in deepening their connection with urban trees.

Structure of the workshop
The one-day workshop is structured into three phases:

Morning session: Introduction to tree blindness, interactive discussions on role of urban trees, and storytelling sessions. (Indoor, 2.5 hours)
Midday session: Tree identification scavenger hunt and interactive exercises in a green space. (Outdoor, 1−1.5 hours)
Afternoon session: Wrap-up session, reflection on learning, and discussion on action steps for supporting urban trees. (Indoor, 1 hour)
Pedagogy
The workshop follows an experiential learning approach, combining interactive discussions, storytelling, and outdoor activities. Participants will engage in visual quizzes, scavenger hunts, and group reflections. The workshop is designed to be participatory and engaging for learners of all backgrounds, from beginners to nature enthusiasts.
