Founder-Artistic Director, Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts
Jayachandran Palazhy is an acclaimed choreographer, educator and one of the country’s leading voices in contemporary movement practice. After training in Bharatanatyam, Kalarippayattu, Kathakali and Indian folk traditions, he further specialised in contemporary dance, choreography and stagecraft at the London Contemporary Dance School. During his fourteen years in the United Kingdom, he founded the Imlata Dance Company, touring extensively across Europe and developing a choreographic practice that brought Indian movement traditions into dialogue with contemporary global approaches.
Since founding Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts in 2000 Bangalore, he has led the creation of India’s first integrated ecosystem for contemporary dance, encompassing professional education, research, performance, digital innovation and international exchange. Under his leadership, initiatives such as the Attakkalari Diploma in Movement Arts and Pedagogy, Attakkalari India Biennial, Incubation Centre for Arts and Media (ICAM), NAGARIKA — a pioneering digital archive of somatic practices and contemporary expressions, and the upcoming Centre for Innovation in Performing Arts (CIPA) continue to shape the future of movement arts. He also served as one of the curators at the Serendipity Arts Festival in 2024 and 2025.
