Girish Karnad's historical play Crossing to Talikota deals with the fall of the Vijayanagara empire in 1565 when the alliance of Deccan Sultanates defeated Vijayanagara, completely wiping out one of the greatest empires of South India. The decimation of Vijaynagara is often depicted in historical writing and in popular understanding as a civilizational clash between Hinduism and Islam. Contrary to this understanding of the event, Karnad brings in a variety of nuances to show that religion played little role in this battle and that it was the regent, Aliya Ramaraya, the power-hungry and egoistic son-in-law of the Vijaynagar Empire and the complicated relationship he had with his own status, that principally led to the final battle and devastation. The splendidly mounted production is directed by Arjun Sajnani who has teamed with senior professionals to bring this epic play to life.
It is designed by Arun Sagar, with music by Prakash Sontekke, costumes by Pia Benegal, lighting by Pradeep Belawadi, and sound design by Clay Kelton. Ashok Mandanna, Viveck Jayant Shah, Veena Sajnani, Maahir Mohiuddin, Swati De, Susan George, Manosh Sengupta, Kartik Iyer, Apurv Aniruddh, Bobbi Kalra, Abhijeet Shetty, Amman head a cast of 30 artists from Bangalore in this elaborate presentation of Karnad's mega work.
