Event Description

Yakshagaana is an ancient form of dance-drama from coastal Karnataka. Historically known as “Gandu Kale” i.e. the repertoire of men, Yakshagaana is a confluence of colourful costumes, energetic music and dance moves, dramatic dialogues, with storylines based mostly on Indian mythology. Chitpavana Mahila Yakshagana troupe is unique in that all the dance-drama performers are women, and are trained in both Thenku Thittu and Badagu Thittu genres of Yakshagaana. The spectrum of members of this troupe ranges from college girls in their teens to senior citizens in their 60s; home makers, software professionals and teachers alike. Over the last 15 years, they have presented many shows including a performance at the 25th anniversary celebration of the Sydney Kannada Sangha in Australia, Delhi Kannada Sangha in New Delhi and in Mysore during Dassara festival. Daksha Yajnya, is a performance in the Thenku Thittu genre. Daksha, son of lord Brahma, had unwillingly married off his daughter Dakshayani to Lord Siva. Daksha decides to insult Siva, by performing a mahayajnya and inviting everyone but his daughter and son-in-law.
