Dilli? Delhi or Dehli? Ya koi ajeeb si Dehleez? Gulaab hai ji hamara shehar- call it by any name. Yamuna ji flows through this city and inspires many to put a ji after their names- some VIP, Some VVIP. What to do? It has always been the site of many important beginnings- of revolutions and falls, many times over; Entry point into the basins of Ganga and Yamuna, something that was a matter of geography but it also shaped so much of the city’s history! But then as we know it is also a city of excesses. A city that actually does not like the dehleez in many matters and in some, abides by them wholesale. Why this contradiction? And what of the many dehleezes that keep intersecting in the digital and real? Suniyega, katha puraani bhi hai aur nayi bhi. Aapse bhi bulwayenge kuch tabhi to paar hogi, sachi dehleez. About the Artist Swaja / Saransh likes to play with Avatars. They are a visual and performance artist and a communications professional who has been invested in themes of Climate Change and Sustainability Education for the past 14 years. Their journalistic training makes them curious to constantly learn and layer their work with various disciplines. Avatari Devi, their queer-stage avatar was born in 2019. Avatari works at reimagining Launda Naach- a folk-theatre form where men, trans-folks and boys perform as women on stage. The theatre form is from their native state of Bihar. In our Desi-aspiring-Videsi context, they love to flirt with Angrezi, Bhojpuri-laced Hindi and of course- men, women and everyone in between. Some political hues are more azeez to them. Others become fodder for some lazeez or delicious humour. So far they have performed in Rainbow Literature Festival, CLAY, Gender Bender @ BIC, Shoonya and Do Din at Hyderabad Urban Lab, Lamakaan. Their films have been nominated and awarded at festivals such as Mumbai International Film Festival, CMS Vatavaran, Dominican Republic Film Festival, and the IDSFFK.
