Selected through an Open Call, these two choreographies engage with and offer a fresh perspective on the thematic of the Critical Zones Exhibition. Delhi is a creative intervention that brings to attention the current air pollution crisis in New Delhi. The pollution in the National Capital Region (NCR) of India has risen at an alarming rate over the past two years. Delhi uses movement to highlight the tension that defines this crisis. The work is a collaboration between two artists: Ainesh Madan and Nitant Nair. Ainesh Madan (he/him) is a dance artist currently based in Bangalore, India. He is a co-founder of the 206 Dance Collective. Ainesh attended Bard College (USA) on a full-tuition scholarship, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Dance and Economics. Ainesh is currently in the fourth year of a Continuous Learning Program in the Alexander Technique. He is also training to become a Ceann-Iuil (Pathfinder) in the animist tradition of Sagh’ic-Tire Dhream. Ainesh is also an experienced, multilingual dance teacher, and a freelance content writer. Rooted is an abstract dialogue between two unlikely companions – a plant and a dancer. The piece disentangles issues relevant to both beings: travelling or remaining local, pruning as aesthetic manipulation, and interconnection. This work-in-progress moves through questions of agency, power, and balance. Are plant and dancer equal? Can they breathe together? Choreography: Dayita Nereyeth Performance: Dayita Nereyeth and Mandrake Shadow: Joshua Sailo Light: Bharavi Sound: Abhaydev Praful Dayita Nereyeth is a co-founder of 206 Dance Collective, senior editor for The Clean Copy, and an Alexander Technique teacher based in Bangalore, India. For her work, she draws inspiration from text, music, identity, relationships, and principles of the Alexander Technique. Dayita creates through improvisation and play. She curates movement experiences by pulling from practical realities of the self, exploring the mundane and pedestrian as performative, and contemporising classical forms. Dayita has a BA in Dance and Psychology from Mount Holyoke College. She has performed in India, the USA, and Switzerland, and presented her choreography in India and online. Entry free!
