Event Description

As the second event in the series, the evening will bring two related, yet distinct dance styles – Kuchipudi and Bharatanatyam. Both dance forms are from the South, both need Carnatic music, and both wear similar costumes. Yet each form is unique in its intent, history, and gait.

The solo pieces will offer the traditional repertoire of the two forms, while the Kuchipudi-Bharatanatyam duet will demonstrate the unique characteristics of each style.

The Dual Margam series curates two classical dance forms of India to highlight their similarities and differences. The solo performances honour traditional repertoire (the Margam), while the duet will juxtapose each unique form with another.

Bharatanatyam
Hailing from a family of artists, Praveen Kumar showed a natural inclination towards arts and dance at a very young age. His tutelage under the eminent gurus Smt. Narmada and Prof. C. V. Chandrasekhar helped him realize the aesthetic depths, traditional of Bharatanatyam and dedicate himself wholeheartedly and purposefully to this ancient dance form. He has skillfully ideated several critically acclaimed productions to his credit including Tyagaraja Hruth Sadana, Rtu Vismruthi, Vani, Sakha, Anangha Vilasa, Pandharpur & many more.

Through his dance productions, he has explored aspects like climate change, fabrics, various complexities and nuances within interpersonal relationships, under-discussed dimensions of mythology, From his footwork to his layered understanding of nritta, abhinaya and his skillful choreography, Praveen Kumar has consistently received critical acclaim over the years and has redefined himself as a performer, staying abreast with the times. He believes that learning is always two-sided and has strived to be relevant, without losing the essence of the form. He has travelled extensively around the globe and in India, taking part in prestigious dance and music festivals and is also the founder of the Chithkala School of Dance at Bangalore.
Praveen Kumar is an empanelled artist of the Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR) and an ‘A’ grade artist on Television. He was recently awarded with the Senior Fellowship to create a new work from Kalavahani Trust, which is headed by Malavika sarukkai


Avijit Das
Kuchipudi
Avijit Das is a spirited dancer who believes in Indian classical dance as not only a medium of showcasing the rich tradition but also a naturalistic channel of expression that is innate to all cultures. With an immense conviction in the modern interpretations of classical dance, he challenges his audience to rejuvenate their sense of aesthetics. Like a glimpse in the mirror, Avijit’s fire brand style of work both when performing as well as teaching, aim to encourage self-identity in the viewers or students. Avijit is also an excellent team player who shares his passion for perfection and constantly strives to incorporate new ideas to create exciting choreography. He is eager to collaborate and any artist can easily partake the wealth of his exquisite art history. Avijit Das is a graded artist from Chennai Dooradarshan. Avijit has been reviewed by several national and international newspapers such as New York Times, Broadway Times, The Hindu & Times of India.

Avijit was initiated into classical dance at the age of five under the guidance of Smt. Sanaka Biswas of Shanti Niketan, West Bengal, India. With keen interest in Kuchipudi, he joined Kuchipudi Art Academy under (Founded by legendary Guru Sri Vempati Chinna Satyam) Vedantam Ramu, Srimayi Vempatti Garu (http://www.kuchipudi.com/) and also learnt from several senior disciples of Guru Sri Vempati Chinna Satyam. Avijit is the founder director of KimAham school of kuchipudi in Bangalore.
