Event Description

Earthquake, directed by Bangalore-based Samragni Dasgupta and presented by The Ennui Collective, is a moving exploration of human connection, loneliness, and the unspoken words that linger between us. It is an adaptation of Bhūmikampa – Das Erdbeben, which received funding for International Cultural Projects from The Department of Arts and Culture of the City of Munich in 2023.

About the play:
Do you ever feel alone, even when surrounded by people? Do you crave connection, even when it cracks a little?
Mira and Sameer meet every week, their meeting as familiar as the apple they share. They speak. Someone leaves. They do this again. And again. Mira goes on a boat ride. Sameer stays in a bubble. There is silence. And again. Mira and Sameer are friends… Yet, their unspoken words scream louder than their conversations. This is a story of cycles. Of coming together, drifting apart, and all the spaces in between. What happens when we finally face our truth? Maybe we hear a strange noise...

Earthquake examines how we navigate the constant shift between connection and isolation. The performance offers an intimate look at how unspoken words, cultural differences, and linguistic barriers often mar human connection. Earthquake blurs the line between stage and audience, immersing viewers in an intimate, unfiltered and uncomfortable conversation. Earthquake explores the unspoken silences between friends, the spaces where expectations falter, and the unresolved tensions that shape modern relationships. It questions whether we can truly reflect when we no longer feel heard—and what happens when emotional safety is lost. It unravels the shifting dynamics between the characters as they navigate unmet expectations of understanding, vulnerability, and mutual expression.

Written using a stream-of-consciousness exercise, the text is meant to evolve with each performance, allowing the meaning and intention to shift, based on who brings it to life.

About the Characters from the Actors:
Mira (Played by Yamuna Kali): Mira is caring, empathetic, supportive, kind, and warm. She knows connection when she feels it, and she gives her all to her relationships. She is a great friend to have. She is always there to support her friends, even when they don’t realise, they need support. Or at least that’s what Mira thinks. But Mira has much to learn about herself and the web of emotions and self-perception she has woven herself into.

Sameer (Played by Naman Roy): Sameer is a man of actions and not words. Thinks he is completely honest about himself but has been living various lies in his life. Relationships for him are like transactions. In a relationship with him you can trust him with anything, but he won’t trust you with a lot of things.
