Event Description

The Parojas are one of the major tribal communities of Odisha, the name being derived from the Odia word Praja or Paraja, meaning “subject” or “common people”. They are primarily found across Koraput district and refer to themselves as Bastarya, tracing their roots to the Bastar region in central India. Known for their strength and hospitality, Parojas lead a simple life.

The Parajas have a strong oral tradition, with their folklore, songs and dances celebrating nature and community life. The Paraja tribe’s Dhemsa dance is a vibrant group performance where women hold each other’s waists, moving in rhythmic circles to the beats of traditional music instruments, symbolizing unity and joy. The Paraja community doesn’t just live their culture—they sing it, dance it, and breathe it every single day. The tribal song and dance of the Paroja community, vividly celebrate nature, seasons, and community life, echoing age-old rituals and folklore. These vibrant performances strengthen social bonds and keep indigenous cultural identities alive.

This interactive performance will showcase their tribe’s ritualistic songs and dance, festival dance forms and a few newly composed songs.
