Event Description

In a world where inequalities are rising, books are essential for building up the young and the values we pass on to them. Together with illustrator Cheyenne Olivier, 2019 Nobel Prize-winning economist Esther Duflo will present her new series of books which explores the themes of school, health, work, environment and entrepreneurship as they relate to poverty. Designed to to encourage children to ask the right questions and help parents talk about poverty in simple terms, the series aims to break down prejudices and stereotypes associated with poverty in today’s world. The event marks the launch of the series in English (Juggernaut), Bengali, Hindi, Kannada, Tamil and Marathi (Pratham Books books). The Keynote by Esther Duflo will be followed by a discussion between her and Cheyenne Olivier, moderated by Roopa Pai. In collaboration with: Speakers Esther Duflo Author & Abdul Latif Jameel Professor of Poverty Alleviation and Development Economics, MIT Esther Duflo is the Abdul Latif Jameel Professor of Poverty Alleviation and Development Economics in the Department of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a co-founder and co-director of the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL). In her research, she seeks to understand the economic lives of the poor, with the aim to help design and evaluate social policies. She has worked on health, education, financial inclusion, environment and governance. Professor Esther Duflo’s first degrees were in history and economics from Ecole Normale Superieure, Paris. She subsequently received a Ph.D. in Economics from MIT in 1999. Duflo has received numerous academic honors and prizes including 2019 Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel (with co-Laureates Abhijit Banerjee and Michael Kremer), the Princess of Asturias Award for Social Sciences (2015), the A.SK Social Science Award (2015), Infosys Prize (2014), the David N. Kershaw Award (2011), a John Bates Clark Medal (2010), and a MacArthur “Genius Grant” Fellowship (2009). With Abhijit Banerjee, she wrote Poor Economics: A Radical Rethinking of the Way to Fight Global Poverty, which won the Financial Times and Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year Award in 2011 and has been translated into more than 17 languages, and the recently released Good Economics for Hard Times. Duflo is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and a Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy. Cheyenne Olivier Illustrator Cheyenne Olivier is a French illustrator. She graduated from the Estienne Arts and Design School in Paris and from the Decorative Arts School in Strasbourg where she holds an MFA in Illustration. Her images, geometric and playful, focus on the visual representation of social and environmental issues. She illustrated a series of ten picture-books on poverty with the Nobel Prize winning economist Esther Duflo. She now illustrates a monthly column on food and economics with the Nobel Prize winner Abhijit Banerjee in Times Of India. She was awarded the Young Talent Award at the International Comics Festival in Angoulême as well as the regional Avenir Prize by the French National Crafts Institute. She is pursuing a PhD in children’s literature at the University of Tours and the Design School in Orléans. She has growing ties with India, through her engagement with Indian authors, artists and readers and her participation in many literary festivals and events. Roopa Pai Children‘s Author Roopa Pai is one of India’s best-known writers for children. This computer engineer-turned-author has written over 30 books, ranging from picture books to chapter books and fiction to non-fiction, on themes as varied as sci-fi fantasy, popular science, maths, history, economics, Indian philosophy, life skills, medicine and memoir. Many of her books are bestsellers and are enjoyed as much by adults as by children. Her best-known books include the 8-part Taranauts, India’s first fantasy-adventure series for children in English, Ready! 99 Must-Have Skills For The World-Conquering Teenager (And Almost-Teenager), the award-winning national bestseller The Gita For Children, listed by Amazon India as one of ‘100 Indian Books To Read In A Lifetime’, and So You Want To Know About Economics, a fun introduction to the subject for the young. Her most recent books are The Yoga Sutras for Children, and Let’s Talk About Trees, published by WWF India. When she is not writing, Roopa leads groups of children and young people on history and heritage walks across her beloved Bangalore and Karnataka, as part of her job as director of a company she co-founded, BangaloreWalks.
