After a two-year long hiatus, we are ecstatic to announce that the AHA! International Theatre Festival for Children 2022 is back! The past two years have been a struggle for us all, but more so for children. They were confined to their homes, couldn’t meet their friends or come outside to explore the arts. Now that the world is open, and the pandemic seems to be plateauing, Ranga Shankara is taking the opportunity to bring our practitioners together to create a festival celebrating children and children’s theatre. Apart from five wonderful productions, one of which is Ranga Shankara’s very own, we are organising seminars, workshops, and activities for not only children, but also parents, teachers, and the likes to be involved in and absorb the spirit of children’s theatre! About Ee Gida, Aa Mara: The plant stands still, the tree too. On the surface we see silent beings, often solitary. Come a little closer. There are sounds. Come even closer. There are entire worlds. Ee Gida, A Mara translates from Kannada to This Plant, That Tree. The play explores the two and magnifies the micro environments they house through movement, visuals and sound. For ages 2 to 3.5, the play runs for 25 minutes followed by an interaction with the performers. The play is largely non verbal, with sporadic use of Kannada, English and Hindi words. Troupe: Ranga Shankara's AHA! Country: India Playwright and Director: Sananda Mukhopadhyaya Duration: 45 minutes Language: None Age: 2 - 3.5 years About AHA! International Theatre Festival for Children ‘AHA!’ is an expression of wonder, excitement and fulfillment that has no language barriers. That’s what we call our children’s theatre program because those are all the emotions that theatre brings to us, whether as an audience or as performers. ‘AHA! International Theatre Festival for Children is Ranga Shankara’s most ambitious program to date and brings the magic of theatre in all its aspects to children. Showcasing national and international productions of repute to the young audiences of Bengaluru, we have featured plays from Germany, Korea, and Switzerland as well as local folk forms of Indian performance art. The festival has seen audiences of up to 75,000 children. The plays are designed for various age groups in such a way that there was something for every child, right from a 20 month old infant to a young adult of 18 years! The first ‘AHA! International Theatre for Children’ Festival was held from August 26th to September 6th, 2009 at Ranga Shankara. By bringing world-class productions from abroad, Ranga Shankara is laying the foundation for a theatre movement among younger people, ensuring that the future of theatre in Bengaluru and in the country has trained and informed talent to complement enthusiasm.
