A general election in India is often called the ‘greatest show on earth.’ In sound, smell and style, India’s elections are unique–but to an outsider, they appear to be “chaos unlimited”. India is valued the world over for its electoral democracy. The credit for this goes to its people.
There are several distinct activities in an election—unbiased and inclusive electoral rolls; polling and counting of votes with integrity and strictly in incompliance with ‘Democracy Principles’, honest and transparent electoral funding; a fair candidate nomination process and campaigning; stringent and equitable compliance with the laws, rules and codes and a non-partisan media playing fair and the critical role of Election Commission of India in ensuring all these.
In this session we will deal with unbiased and inclusive electoral rolls, linking of Aadhar with Voter ID; polling and counting of votes (EVM and VVPAT) with integrity and strictly in incompliance with ‘Democracy Principles’ and critical review of Election Commission of India functioning as an independent constitutional body.
