Event Description

A beautiful collection of handcrafted products

available directly from the makers.

The artisanal sector has been profoundly affected by the pandemic, with few exhibitions, large-scale cancellations of both domestic and export orders and insurmountable difficulties in shipping stock. To support artisans and help rejuvenate the craft sector the inaugural Mudita Makers Market is taking place at the BIC (Bangalore International Centre) with over 20 artisans attending. It will be a celebration of Indian craft traditions like never before. This will take place on October 21st, 22ndand 23rdfrom 10am to 7pm.

We are working with over 20 artisans to showcase their beautiful products, and incredible skills. We wanted to give last mile artisans the opportunity to show their products, and to display others in ways they deserved to be seen. This was all possible because of the Creative Dignity initiative for offline events called Artisan Direct. The event will therefore be a tribute to our rich craft traditions and will showcase the history, skills, and dedication that are at the heart of these crafts. We are celebrating how lucky we are as a country that these textiles, paintings, durries, and embroidery are still something we can see and buy, where in the west they have long disappeared or become unaffordable to most.

This is an Artisan Direct showcase presented in partnership with Creative Dignity. Our local team has worked with the artisans to collaboratively curate, merchandise, and display in innovative and visually exciting ways. The event has been funded by the kind sponsorship of Balaji’s Antiques & Collectibles and individuals. The artisans will receive 100% of all sales directly with no fees to the organisers.

Visitors will be able to dive into a sea of fabric with the beautiful block printing of Ajark, the gorgeous fifty-two motifs of the Baavanbuti weaves of Bihar, soft and fine Bengal muslin, quilted and woven bedspreads from Karnataka and Bihar, warm woollen Kullu shawls, Tangaliya textiles with beads of thread like stars, embedded in the night sky and Siddi quilts where the design is an attitude not a pattern.

It is also an opportunity for consumers to ‘Go Green’ shopping from sustainable products including naturally dyed indigenous cotton, Himalayan organic rajma, wild honey and walnuts, biodegradable banana fibre basketware and hemp shoes! We will also have funky bags upcycled from waste plastic. If you bring your left-over plastic bags from home Rajiben Vankar will demonstrate how she can weave these into reusable rainbows of textile!

A perfect time to stock up for the festival season inviting the true spirit of Diwali into your homes with beautiful handmade artisanal gifts.

About the Organisers

Creative Dignity

Creative Dignity is a volunteer led movement spread across India, actively working on relief, rehabilitation and rejuvenation within the craft ecosystem. Established in early 2020, CD has brought together diverse creative producers, practitioners, and professionals to energise the ecosystem that Indian artisans need in this time of COVID-19 and post-COVID-19 impact. By keeping artisans at the core of every initiative, CD’s goal is to enable artisans to become equal and active participants in building a thriving ecosystem, where they have the agency to thrive with dignity.

Creative Dignity was recently recognised as one of the 12 ecosystem builders (multi-stakeholder partnerships) in the list of India's top 50 Covid 19 last mile responders by the World Economic Forum's Covid Response Alliance for Social Entrepreneurs.

Artisan Direct Showcase

Creative Dignity’s Artisan Directis an initiative that directly connects craft enthusiasts and business owners with artisans. Cd members act as facilitators for the craft ecosystem and enable active collaboration and engagement amongst buyers and producers to further fuel our creative economy. Artisan Direct activities include a one-way virtual showcase, whatsapp group for buyers to be able to view artisan catalogues and connect them directly to build business relationships. With the festive season round the corner CD members are organising and facilitating physical exhibitions across India. Artisanal products are so much better experienced and appreciated when bought directly from the maker.
