Event Description

Herlambang Bayu Aji is a Berlin based visual artist and shadow puppet maker. His work focuses on Indonesian social issues, such as politics, human rights, deforestation and the environment. Aji’s shadow puppets, called Wayang Rajakaya, have been showcased in projects and exhibitions across Java and Europe for the last 20 years. The stories are mostly child-friendly, despite the serious topics.

During his residency at the Archives at the National Center for Biological Sciences, Aji explored issues on ecological damange and wildlife, focusing how the Indian law, the government and society protect the Bengal tiger, an endangered species, from extinction. Drawing inspiration from the city’s ecological and cultural histories, particularly the Bengal tiger and Karnataka’s tradition of Togalu Gombeyaata shadow puppetry, he has developed an installation and performance that brings Indonesian, German and Indian perspectives into dialogue.

About the piece:
The spirits of an extinct Javanese tigress and a Javanese leopard seek the Indian tigress to learn how it has survived in the Indian forest. How does their number continue to increase while many other animals are endangered or extinct? Is it for real or it is just a utopia? During their way, they see also encounter other Indian animals.
