Have you ever played with fire?

In this hands-on workshop participants learn a technique the artist has spent five years developing: burning or “fuming” wood with matches, candles, and pyrography tools to create textured, tonal, almost painterly images. The process allows partial control over the outcome, producing fine relief-like details and layered effects akin to glazing with flame.

Fire is at the heart of creation, alongside wood and the artist’s own hands, in a slow, attentive dialogue between intention and element. Participants will experiment directly with flame and wood, exploring a completely new material language while reconnecting with something older: attentiveness to matter, to process, and to the natural world.

Please Note: Limited to 50 seats. Children 6+ are welcome to attend, provided they are accompanied by a parent or caregiver.

Arta Raituma
Multimedia Visual Artist
Arta Raituma is a multimedia visual artist from Latvia, currently residing and working between Latvia and India. Her practice explores the sublime in nature, rites of passage, and threshold situations. Wood burning as her core medium, she often combines it with painting, and uses organic materials in on-site installations. She holds an MA and BA in fine arts from the Art Academy of Latvia. She has held over ten solo shows and more than fifty group shows, mostly in Latvia and Portugal, and recently participated in the Kochi-Muziris Biennale. She continues her work at her studio in Kerala, India.
