Event Description

The First Light concert and conversation series will present young Hindustani and Carnatic musicians in an intimate and informal setting. Every alternate month, on a Sunday morning, these thoughtfully curated concerts will feature a group of young, emerging musicians who are talented, sensitive and capable of independent thinking and critical inquiry, from across India.

They will attempt to engage with their respective lineages and the traditional as well as especially the lesser-performed material they have received, in distinctive ways. The musicians are encouraged to present a repertoire that reflects their long years of training, core aesthetic influences and values as well as their individual outlooks and interpretation. In addition, for the first time, we will invite a young musician colleague who will serve as an interlocutor and intermediary between the performing musicians and the audience. This colleague will speak to the audiences and the musicians to share critical aspects of the cultural and social histories of the art form, the compositions and their creative processes, drawing listeners into the prep and backstory of a concert. At the end of the concert, the colleague musician will lead a brief Q&A session.

The Bangalore-based Hindustani vocalist Aniruddh Aithal has agreed to play this role for this concert. In this third concert of the series, Siddharth Belmannu, a vocalist from the Kirana and Gwalior lineages will present a set of compositions from the wider Indian art music repertoire by such Masters as Pandit Jagannathbuwa Purohit, Pandit Ramashray Jha, Pandit SN Ratanjankar, and his Guru Pandit VinayakTorvi. He will also share his thoughts and experiences as a listener, student and young practitioner while preparing for this concert.

He will be accompanied by Sumith Naik on tabla and Sameer Havaldar on harmonium. These concerts and conversations featuring young musicians are a part of Kishima Arts Foundation’s Indian Classical Music & Performing Arts Public Digital Archive Project 2022-28 which seeks to document Gurus/senior artists and also encourage younger, talented classical musicians to delve deeper into their traditions to try and present lesser performed and exquisite compositions along with stories of their respective lineages.
