FLIGHT RESPONSE

Tanvi Rao (songwriting, voice, piano),

ft. Abhin Iype (keyboard)

and PHVSD Kiran (drumset)

Flight Response is a contemporary jazz-inspired songwriting project led by singer-songwriter and music educator Tanvi Rao, known for her work with Sulk Station and Haiku. The project features a collection of deeply personal original songs written over the last year, bringing together her love of jazz harmony, traditional songwriting, and rhythmic exploration with an adventurous spirit.

As both an educator and a lifelong learner, Tanvi believes that artistic growth comes from remaining actively engaged in the creative process. These songs are an extension of her ongoing musical journey, one that has evolved from the electronic and Hindustani influences of her earlier work to its current style—which she sometimes likes to describe as mellow-prog-jazz-pop. Together with Abhin Iype, a pianist and composer whose work bridges different styles of music, and P H V S D Kiran, a drummer and music educator with an equally curious approach to musical exploration, Flight Response comes to life.

Tanvi Rao is a Bengaluru-based musician, composer, and music educator. She first gained recognition as one half of the indie-electronic duo Sulk Station, whose debut album Till You Appear received critical acclaim and led to performances at major music festivals in India and abroad. Alongside her artistic practice, she is a committed music educator whose work is grounded in student-led learning, creative collaborations, and community-building. Her work draws on a background in Hindustani classical music, classical piano, contemporary songwriting, and collaborative music-making.

Abhin Iype is a pianist, composer and producer from Bangalore, India. Over many years of musical exploration, has developed a unique touch on his instrument, and an engaging and supportive attitude towards listening and interacting with other musicians. Having studied jazz piano at the Conservatory of Maastricht in the Netherlands, he has worked and collaborated with several artists from all over the world including Dimitris Terpizis Quartet, Orchestravian, Henri Schappert, Fransisco Laurito, hagneya, and Fringe Orchestra. Abhin draws influences from styles such as jazz, RnB, rock, folk, western classical and Indian classical music among many other streams, and is passionate about understanding and breaking boundaries between musical genres. He currently leads his own contemporary jazz compositional project, Shift.

P H V S D Kiran is a Bangalore-based drummer and educator whose work spans jazz festivals, Indian folk fusion ensembles, rock shows, improvised accompaniment for contemporary dance, and collaborations with Hindustani artists and the Coimbatore Chamber Chorale. He currently performs with his band Sonic Caravan, with vocalist Rubina Robinson presenting jazz and pop classics with a twist; with singer-songwriter and educator Tanvi Rao’s band, Flight Response; and with Dhrupad artist Murali Gowda’s Rudra Veena project. Kiran is visiting faculty at R.V. University and teaches at his studio, The Portal. He holds a Trinity Grade 8 distinction and has won the London Sinfonietta’s Steve Reich Clapping Music competition. Following a career in mechanical engineering in the UK, he transitioned into music full-time in 2019.
